Neymar Suffers a Torn Ligament, Can He Still Compete in The Future?
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) football player, Neymar suffered a torn ligament in his ankle against Lille, Sunday (19/2/2023) evening. Because of this, he is in danger of being absent against Bayern Munich in the second leg of the last 16 of the Champions League, on March 8.
"Test results today confirmed that Neymar's swollen ankle has torn ligaments," PSG said in a statement.
So, can Neymar still compete after this?
Orthopedic specialist and foot and ankle consultant traumatologist, Dr. Astuti Pitarini, SpOT (K), explained that ligament tears are divided into three, namely mild, moderate and severe tears.
If what Neymar experiences is a mild to moderate tear, usually no surgery is needed, only physiotherapy is needed until he recovers so he can return to competition. But if what you experience is a ligament tear that is classified as severe or completely torn, it usually requires surgery and a longer recovery time. Because the patient can experience reduced muscles so that the impact he will experience a decrease in agility when exercising and difficulty walking.
According to Dr. Astuti, athletes who have tears or injuries can still return to competition. However, the patient must undergo rest before returning to competition.
"For mild and moderate tears, we set a target for normal activities, 4 to 6 weeks. If you need surgery, the target is longer, maybe the rest can take 6 to 9 months and the target is to return to competition for athletes, it can be up to 9 months. it's quite heavy, usually 12 months to 1 year. Meanwhile, non-athletes can only return to sports in the eighth month, and the ninth." Statement from doctor Astuti during the interview.
