Know the Characteristics, Causes and Ways to Overcome Speech Delay.

Children who are cheerful, full of laughter, and love to tell stories are certainly the dream of all parents. However, there are times when a number of children experience delays in speaking or speech delay.

Usually, toddlers who start to enter the age of 2 years will be more talkative. This is because he is starting to learn language and word structures, so his speaking skills will be smoother and clearer.

However, what if your little one is over 2 years old but rarely talks? Is that a sign of a child's speech delay? Let's know all the important things about children who speak late.

Speech delay is a delay in the development of speech and language. Actually there is no age standard for toddler language development. This is because every child does have a different stage of development. However, you must be vigilant if your baby has the following characteristics:

  1. Rarely makes a sound. Usually from the age of 9 months your little one can say a few words like "mama" or "papa" and at the age of 12 months they can already identify several objects around them.

  2. Not responding approx. After entering the age of 8 months, your little one will usually respond when we call or talk to him.

  3. Does not understand gestures and hand movements. Even if toddlers can't speak yet, they will generally understand other people's gestures and hand movements. Like when waving your hand when you're about to say goodbye or imitating a kiss bye.

  4. Can only do a little vocabulary. By age 1, your child should be babbling and able to use consonants when speaking (such as p, b, m, d, and n). Usually the babbling process begins by imitating the sound he hears, then adding 1 or 2 other words.

  5. Cannot imitate other people's speech. If your little one can't follow the tone and type of voice you say well, there are several possibilities to watch out for.

Many factors cause children to experience speech delays. Here are some things that can trigger a child to experience speech delay, including:

  1. Hearing problems. Children who are hearing impaired may have difficulty speaking, understanding, imitating, and using language.

  2. Functional impairment. Functional disorders will usually improve with the age of the child because this disorder is one of the mildest disorders.

  3. Harelip. In addition to cleft lips, children who have short tongues or jaw abnormalities can experience speech delays.

  4. Lack of stimulation. Not always due to medical factors, the reason why children are late in speaking is also because people around them are rarely invited to communicate.

  6. Malnutrition. Nutrition that is not fulfilled properly also causes children to experience speech delays.

Speech delay that is not handled properly and quickly will result in growth and development, such as problems when learning to read and write and difficulty understanding sentences. Children will become less confident when playing or talking with their friends. For other things, of course this is related to emotional or mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. This is because it is difficult to express what is wanted or felt.

It is important to carry out a child's speech development examination which consists of:

  1. Gross movement. This is an examination to see the development of the use of large muscles and movement of places. For example, a baby on his stomach learns to sit, walk, go up and down stairs, run, jump, and so on.

  2. Smooth Movement Examination of the development of fine movements is a stage of the movement of small muscles and body coordination movements. The examination includes whether your little one can be invited to make eye contact, whether his eyeballs can follow a moving object, and so on.

  3. Language and speech development, whether your little one can hear or not, has an understanding of words, the ability to babble, or make meaningful words, and so on.

  4. Social personal development, This is a combination of all children's skills based on age, which are related to tasks regarding independence and social interaction of children in the future, such as the ability to make friends with children of their age and be able to carry out daily activities independently.

  5. Evaluation with experts, can see a language pathologist or consultation with a pediatrician. Usually a series of tests will be carried out to find out the extent of the speech delay problem. Based on the test results, the speech-language pathologist will recommend speech therapy for your child.

If your baby experiences the signs above, immediately check with the pediatrician and do speech therapy as soon as possible to minimize the impact in the future.
